‘Universal’ Design Delusion

Often times businesses request a “universal design” from web designers in efforts to appeal to everyone. It’s a common occurrence, but is counterintuitive when it come to building your business’s community. Your business’s web design must suit your business’s image in order to build a strong following. Windy City Web Designs discourages universal design for the following reasons.

  1. It’s bland. Your website and your business in turn, seems to lack personality if it doesn’t have a certain flair to it. Frankly, your business will be deemed nothing special if your website doesn’t feature anything unique. A lack of flair could also suggest little market research. If customers don’t get a personal feel from your website, it may seem like your business isn’t aware of its audience. Its design could make customers uncomfortable and shoo their business away.
  2. It’s not suitable. With virtually infinite choices, customers are free to choose whatever product or service they desire. Customers might not cherish their relationship with your company as highly as you do. Your competitors still serve as options to your customers, so making your business personal reminds them of your care. If one brand fits their needs better than another, then they’ll definitely choose the better fit.
  3. It’s not valuable. When your customers could easily buy your product or service from another business, then your business lacks chicness. You want your business to stand out from competitors and this can be achieved with special attention. Making it known that your business cares and identifying your business as an personality, your customers will keep coming back.
  4. It’s difficult to communicate. Universal design makes it difficult to create your website’s content. Should your content be short and sweet, or detailed? Should your tone be colloquial, or formal? Focusing on your business’s exact niche, your business can better serve your business’s purpose. Your audience’s knowledge base about your product will vary too. So having a live chat or phone service will not only help create understanding, but also a good impression.
