How To Coordinate Colors To Fit Your Brand

Color can have a significant effect on people’s perception of a product or brand. The purpose of branding is to encode a brand in a person’s memory and be able to retrieve it from their memory. People remember shapes and colors and those are two powerful tools that you can use to your advantage. What color do you think of when you hear of the company “Tiffany’s”? How about McDonald’s? The color you use to brand your company has to stand out and make a statement. Colors have different meanings and can trigger different emotions depending on how you use them. Here is a list of colors and the emotions people often associate with them:

1.   Red is associated with energy, war, danger, strength and power. People often use red to stimulate people to make quick decisions such as “buy now” or “contact us”.

2.   Blue symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom and can produce a calming effect. It is the preferred color among males and is the color for corporate America.

3.   Orange is a very vibrant color that represents energy, enthusiasm and happiness. Many people associate the color orange to the sun, the tropics and heat. It is a color effective to promote food products and toys.

4.   Yellow has a high energy, warming effect and is associated with joy, happiness, and energy. Overusing this color can become overwhelming so when using this color use it in moderation.

5.   Green is the color of nature and it symbolizes growth, harmony, and freshness. Dark green is a symbol for money.

6.   White is a clean, pure color and represents clarity, while black is the opposite and can represent mystery, drama or power.

7.   Pink is a romantic soft color and is used in a delicate manner.

When choosing the color for your business, make sure that the color goes with your type of business. Checking out your competition and bouncing ideas off of them may help with your decision. Also, try matching it with the color of your logo so your colors don’t clash. If you decide to choose more than one color use a color palette to make sure the colors are compatible with each other. Color is a very important element when creating your brand’s identity.
