Hostility Toward Comic Sans

By now it’s a known fact: all designers hate comic sans. How has this one font garnered so much hate though? The history of comic sans is a perilous one and Windy City Web Designs explains where the hate is rooted.

Comic sans was created in early nineties and was released for general use not long after. Originally intended to be used as comic-book-style speech, comic sans was made available on Microsoft Movie Maker and turned into the default font for Microsoft Publisher and Internet Explorer. It spread to other brands, featured on Beanie Babies tags, collectible coins, and even The Sims.

Comic sans was infecting every industry and people began to get sick of it. The font that was supposed to fun, friendly-looking, and suitable for comic books and cartoons was being misplaced. Amateur designers weren’t considering the effects of their font choices on the image of their publication or brand. Designers misused comic sans; the font was featured on job applications, signs warning of grave dangers, business letters, sports jerseys. The misuse of comic sans earned a stigma synonymous with it’s name – annoying.
