A Thought On Typeface

Recently, Windy City Web Designs analyzed the history of the much hated font comic sans. Don’t disregard this font’s past though; history does repeat itself. King Sidharth, a designer at Instamojo, warns of other “really really bad” fonts that designers should avoid – namely Helvetica and Arial, calling them plain ugly.

Sidharth worries that designers have become obtuse to the importance of text. Just because most websites default to either Helvetica or Arial, doesn’t make it the best choice. He has some forgiveness for fonts recreated for the web, like Helvetica’s cousin Helvetica Neue. He doesn’t detest the fonts completely either; he regards typography as a designer’s decision and respects it as long as used correctly. Otherwise, Sidharth stresses the importance of a suitable typeface that flows with your business’s branding.

Amateur designers are most vulnerable to the default font trap. They’re either ignorant to the intended flair for the project or they don’t care about typography. Understandably, designers like to use common fonts because they’re everywhere. It’s safe to assume that it’s compatible with all platforms. The lack of thought concerns Sidharth and other web design pros.
